Baseball is one of the five available games to play in Wii Sports and Wii Sports Club. One game consists of three innings, each team taking a turn at batting and a turn on the field when three outs are acquired. The main gameplay of the sport is either holding the Wii Remote like a bat and swinging at thrown baseballs or throwing the baseball using different pitches.

Gameplay[]

Top Inning[]

At the top of the inning, the player takes control of the players at-bat. The player must swing their Wii Remote when the ball comes across the plate. The force of the swing, the positioning of the swing, and the time the bat is swung will affect where the ball goes.

Bottom Inning[]

In the bottom inning, the player takes control of the pitcher and chooses how to throw the ball in an attempt to strike out the batter. If the batter hits the ball, the computer then controls the fielders as they try to catch the ball. If the computer catches the ball, then the runner is out. If the computer doesn't catch the ball, the distance of the ball, and how long it stayed in the air along with rolling on the ground affects how far the runner goes.

Hints/Tips[]

  • Experiment with different types of pitches and see which kind of pitch works best.
    • When you hold the "A" button, you throw a screwball.
    • When you hold the "B" button, you throw a curveball.
    • When you hold the "A" and "B" buttons, you throw a splitter.
      • Note that splitters lead to a "Ball" if the batter doesn't swing.
      • Sometimes the pitcher can accidentally throw a fastball instead of a splitter, which can be easily identified when a sudden red exclamation mark appears on their head.
      • If the batter gets "Ball Four" it is a Move, to get this, get 4 balls in a row.
    • When no buttons are pressed, you throw a fastball.
    • Experimenting with speed is also crucial, as light throws can produce from 56mph (90km/h) to 65mph (104km/h), medium throws can produce from 66mph (106kph) to 86mph (138km/h), and hard throws can produce from 87mph (140km/h) to 100mph (160km/h).
  • You can also change the direction of the pitch by pressing the right or left button on the d-pad/control stick and then pitching.
    • Note that this leads to a "Ball" if the batter doesn't swing.
  • Pressing the 2 button will change it to a “submarine” (sidearm) pitch.
  • Pressing the 1 button will change it back to an overhanded pitch.
  • Pros and Champions can easily predict when and what the user will throw. In this case, be very creative on your throws.
  • You can bunt by simply keeping your Wii Remote horizontally while batting. This typically will result in an Out, however.
    • By tilting your Wii Remote slightly forward, you can potentially bunt to third for a Single. The margin of error between bunting Out and for Singles is very sharp. This also starts to not work against higher-leveled opponents as they throw more varied pitches instead of simply fastballs and vice versa.
  • If your opponent throws the ball and the ball is not spinning, it will be a splitter.

Team Info[]

When you start playing against the first team (Elisa's team) while progressing you have to play the same team 8 more times, each with a different Mii pitching. Then one at a time, the first team's Miis are replaced by the Miis of the next team. This goes on until Sakura's team.

Behavior of fielders[]

Depending on where the ball is driven (hit) to, only the fielders on the side being hit would run to get the ball. Also, some fielders could potentially sit the at-bat out depending on the type of the ball: If it is a weak grounder, all fielders come to get the ball (including the catcher), if it is a stronger grounder, the catcher sits the at-bat out, but the pitcher and the basemen run to the ball. If it is a popup or a flyball, only the basemen and outfielders try to get the ball. Once the ball leaves the infield, the basemen return back to their positions, and once the ball reaches the orange diamond of the field, the pitcher returns back to his/her position. When fielders return to their position, they stay there for the remainder of the at-bat, but one lucky triple can startle the basemen if it rolls back to the infield. Whenever the ball is barely moving horizontally, the fielders remain in place, when the ball is moving, the fielders try their best to stand underneath the ball. Most of the time, the 1st and 2nd basemen or the shortstop and the 3rd baseman are the baseman fielders that run to get the ball, but if the ball is hit straight down the middle, the 2nd baseman and the shortstop try to get the ball. The pitcher cannot catch the balls going straight down the center, so that allows the ball to go through the pitcher. Also, only 2 outfielders can run to catch the ball, in some rare occasions, when the ball hits hard off the wall in the deep left field near the 3rd base line, it speeds into the deep center field, potentially reaching right field, but the right fielder will remain in his/her position as if the ball would never reach him/her, allowing a long fielding, resulting in a triple. Foul balls will cause the fielders to run back to their positions when the umpire calls foul, but foul outs are possible. When a home run is called, the fielders run straight to the field fence as if they can phase through it, until the cutscene of the batter running the bases appears, when the fielders return to their positions. The same rule applies to ground-rule doubles as well.

Types of Plays (List)[]

  1. Strike-out: The player or CPU misses a clean strike with two previous strikes already in place. (note that Foul Balls count as strikes, but can never Strike a player out).
  2. Out: The player or CPU hit the ball but it was caught by the opposing team (flyball out, could be a foul out), or rolled on the ground for less than three seconds and is in the plate zone (ground out, fielder throws ball to first, present in v1.01 and newer).
  3. Foul Ball: The player has hit the ball, but it hasn't reached the "fair" zone. In other words, the ball has either landed outside the base lines or has died (exited the field) in the foul territory. This counts as a strike for the first two strikes, but it doesn't count for a third. A ground ball off a base line results in foul if the fielders catch it before it reaches a base, but it is fair if it rolls into the foul territory after clearing a base. In the unused files, there is a "Fair Ball" line, which could have played if a ball exited the fair territory after passing a base. Also, if the ball rolls into the small strip of field off the first base line inside the rectangle, it is a foul. Also, a foul ball can cross the foul pole into fair territory, but when the ball dies in the foul territory, it will be called foul.
  4. Ball-four: The pitcher has thrown four "Balls", which is equivalent to a batter reaching a "Single". In real baseball, this is known as a "Walk" or a "Base-on-Base".
  5. Base hit: The batter has hit the ball enough to run one or more bases, the fielder winks at the player before the cutscene changes. A single is the only base hit possible in the infield, which can be attained by a lucky bunt or an error (see below). For the outfield, it all depends on time, not distance. A single in the deep outfield is possible, whereas a triple could be possible near the infield if the ball hangs in the air for long and the outfielder errs the ball.
    1. Single: The batter has hit the ball enough to run a single base (either less than 6 seconds in the outfield to catch the ball, a lucky bunt or an error in the infield).
    2. Double: The batter has hit the ball enough to run two bases (in the outfield, takes 6-9 seconds for the outfielders to catch the ball).
    3. Ground Rule Double: The batter has hit the ball, bounces in the field of play, then lands in the crowd (like a home run).
    4. Triple: The batter has hit the ball enough to run three bases (this is very uncommon to achieve as you need the ball to hit the wall and/or land in a place where it takes over 9 seconds for the outfielders to get the ball).
    5. Home Run: The batter has hit the ball far enough to run all the bases. This means hitting the ball into the audience or beyond the ad boards. Also, if you hit the foul pole, even if the ball bounces into foul territory, it counts as a home run if it hits it above the green line.
    6. Out-of-the-Park: The batter has hit the ball far enough to run all the bases. This means hitting the ball out of the stadium. It is possible for a superfast ball to exit the park at such a velocity where the game no longer detects it, in this case, the outfielders keep running at the wall for some time, eventually, the at-bat is canceled and nothing happens.
  6. Error: The batter has hit the ball, but the fielder dropped or fumbled it trying to catch it. In this case, no matter how long it takes to completely catch a ball (assuming the ball lands in fair territory), the batter will reach first base. When this happens, an exclamation mark appears over the fielder's head and a groaning sound can be heard. In extremely rare cases, a fielder can err a ball into another fielder, which results in a flyball out.

Sakura, The Champion of Baseball[]

SakuraDACot

Sakura, the Champion of Baseball.

With a skill level of 1250 to 1349, Sakura's team is made up of herself along with Nick, Miyu, David, Maria, Helen, Steve, Pierre, and Takumi. Sometimes she appears on your team if you aren't playing one of the top Pros (Maria upwards) at a level of around 1300. She often plays with Elisa, Emma (the two worst Miis), and Nick (the best Mii, excluding herself) when playing on your team. She mostly throws splitters in an attempt to confuse the player. She uses sidearm throwing and throws left-handed.

Wii Sports Club[]

Baseball appears as a sport in Wii Sports Club. In this game, the stadium is bigger and an audience now appears in the stands. The pitching has been changed with gamepad controls. The Champion is Enrique. After beating him, hold the 1 button at the loading screen to use the metal spiky bat.

Skill levels of the CPUs' Tennis and Baseball are believed to be almost the same, except for Alice, as she replaces Enrique's spot at Level 8 and Barbara is now only a team player. Also, they are solely team captains in this game and nothing more. Tennis partners of the player and other CPUs that are unused in the other sports are the teammates of opponent CPU teams.

If you hold L and R on the GamePad and throw, you will pitch a "submarine" (sidearm).

Trivia[]

  • Getting a triple, an out-of-the-park or a ground-rule double is rarer than getting a home run or a double.
  • The Home teams and Away teams have different pants in the original Wii Sports.
    • The Away team has stripes going all around the pants, while the Home team's pants only have one stripe on each side of the pants.
  • The "Void" of Baseball is green and not black like all the other sports.
  • In Wii Sports, the maximum confirmed skill level you can achieve without hacks is 3099. After achieving that skill level, even a 99-0 game cannot increase one's skill level any further.
  • In the original Wii Sports, the first nine CPU Baseball teams contain the same nine Miis, just in different Baseball positions.
  • Unlike Wii Sports, there are no specific teams tied to the CPUs in Wii Sports Club.
  • The outfits in Wii Sports Club use dimmer colors than the Wii Sports outfits. They are also made to look more like actual Baseball uniforms.
    • There is a difference in gender in outfits too. The females use shorts while the males use pants.

      Comparison of the two.

  • This sport in Wii Sports Club, Tennis, and Basketball are the only sports in the series to have the Beginner and Champion be of the same Wii Party difficulty (Beginner for the sports).
  • The pitching Mii can hit the batter with the Baseball (though this rarely occurs). This counts as a foul ball, however.
  • In Wii Sports Club, there is a big screen that shows the Baseball field with no shading and no Miis in the crowd.
    20200428 160920
  • The Wii Sports announcer in the Japanese and Korean Versions and the Wii Sports Club one say, "Hit" instead of "Single" whenever it is a single and "Time" instead of "Time Out" when you pause the game. Also, "2-base hit"/"Double", "3-base hit"/"Triple", "Out"/"You're out!/Batter out", "Entitled 2-base"/"Ground-rule double", "Change"/"Change Sides", and "Game, set"/That’s the game". Also, the scoreboard in Japan and Korea is SBO and not BSO.
  • Whenever the players on the field drop the ball in the original Wii Sports, it zooms in on them. In Wii Sports Club, it zooms out a little.
  • When playing online in Wii Sports Club, having CPU Miis on your team will result in the other player seeing other CPU Miis instead of the ones you see on your screen. For example, you can have Juliette batting on your screen, but the person you're playing against might be looking at Bo-Jia ready to bat on their screen.
  • Silke appears in most Baseball teams in the original Wii Sports, with 17.
  • In total, there are 49 Wii Sports Club CPU Miis who appear as Baseball teammates in that game.
  • If one's Wii console does not have enough Miis in their Mii Plaza or their Wii U does not have enough Favorite Miis, their team may be filled by CPU Miis.
  • The Miis that appear in the audience are CPU Miis that don't play any sports besides being a Baseball/Tennis teammate. They are mainly, Yuya, Faustine, Marius, Alphonse, Kentaro, Millie, Paula, Rui-Lin, Delilah, João, Hiromi, William, Pian-Pian, Marit, Mi-sun, Joseph, Steven, Sho, Anna, Haruka, Shu-Hui, Sara, Bo-Jia, Juliette, Xiuping, Leonel, Masako, Haixiang, Bernd, Guillermo, Yuriko and Yuehua.
    • The only exception is Marit.
